Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the 'bhumi pujan' (groundbreaking ceremony) for a landmark 12.2-km bridge connecting Sualkuchi and Palasbari over the Brahmaputra on Sunday.
The Rs 3,197.20 crore project is envisioned as transformative for connectivity and development along the river's banks.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sarma shared his aspirations for completing the bridge by June 2028.
Highlighting the project’s innovative features, he said, “In order to not disturb wetlands in Sualkuchi end, an elevated corridor will be part of the bridge.”
Sarma underlined the bridge’s potential impact, stating, “This bridge will bring a transformative change between the North and South banks of the Brahmaputra and its people.”
He also detailed ongoing and future connectivity projects to strengthen links across the state’s major river.
Expressing optimism for a more connected Assam, Sarma remarked, “I hope that one day, there will be a bridge over the Brahmaputra in every district it flows through.”
Reflecting on Assam’s progress in the last decade, Sarma credited the return of peace for driving development and attracting significant investments, such as Tata’s semiconductor manufacturing unit.
He urged legislators to dedicate themselves to their constituencies’ development, thereby contributing to the state’s growth story.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) acknowledged the occasion on X, noting, “Sarma performed the bhumi pujan for the Palasbari-Sualkuchi Bridge over the Brahmaputra in Kamrup district today, following the foundation stone laid by Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2023.”
The CMO highlighted that the bridge will reduce travel time between Palasbari and Sualkuchi, improving connectivity and driving regional development. It added that the project signifies a critical milestone in Assam’s infrastructure development efforts.
