The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several northeastern states of India, including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, due to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected on Friday, May 30, 2025. The adverse weather conditions are attributed to the advancement of the southwest monsoon and a deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal.
Assam
In Assam, districts such as Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, and Sribhumi are under red alert. The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall accompanied by squally winds reaching up to 60 km/h.
Guwahati has experienced moderate rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed for rescue operations in affected regions.
Meghalaya
Meghalaya is witnessing heavy rainfall, with runoff from the hills causing flooding in Guwahati. Areas like Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Beltola, Hatigaon, and Wireless have reported knee-deep water inundating roads and residential zones.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has cited the excess runoff from Meghalaya and the overwhelmed drainage system as the primary causes. Authorities are on high alert, with teams working continuously to restore drainage and provide assistance.

Manipur
In Manipur, the IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely on May 30. A red alert has been issued for the entire Northeast region, including Manipur, on Friday, while an orange alert will be in place on Saturday.
Parts of Manipur, including Ukhrul, Chandel, Bishnupur, and Thoubal districts, face a heightened risk of flash floods due to intense rainfall activity. The IMD has advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Mizoram and Tripura
Mizoram and Tripura are also under red alert, with the IMD warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. In Mizoram, all educational institutions were closed on Thursday following a weather warning issued by the IMD. The forecast predicted heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for May 29.
In response, the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department issued a warning, and the state school education director mandated the closure of schools across the state. Although the predicted thunderstorm did not occur, the state experienced significant monsoon rains, leading to landslides causing road blockages and disruption of water supply in Aizawl city.
Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal Pradesh is experiencing widespread moderate rainfall, with the heaviest spells anticipated on Friday and Saturday. The IMD has issued a red alert for the entire Northeast region, including Arunachal Pradesh, on Friday, while an orange alert will be in place on Saturday. The state is likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall in some areas, leading to potential landslides and road disruptions. Residents have been advised to stay alert and monitor weather updates.
The IMD has urged residents in affected areas to remain indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms, and stay updated on weather alerts. Authorities have been advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather conditions.
