Tensions prevailed in Doda district and adjoining areas on Thursday following the detention of MLA Mehraj Malik, which triggered massive protests, leading to the further detention of more than 80 people.
AAP MLA Mehraj Malik was detained by the authorities under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA).
The district administration has imposed prohibitory measures in the district, including suspension of mobile internet and Wi-Fi services. The administration invoked Section 163 of the BNSS Act, restricting public movement without prior permission on Monday.
While the situation has remained calm in the district with no fresh protests, security personnel continue to maintain a strict vigil in the area. Security forces were deployed around Doda town and parts of Bhaderwah, Gandoh, and Thatri amid tension over alleged high-handedness of administrative officials.
Malik was allegedly detained for disturbing public order and has been lodged in Kathua jail since Monday.
The Public Safety Act (PSA) is one of the stringent acts of the Constitution that allows the detention of up to 2 years without charge in some cases. Malik happens to be the first sitting MLA lodged in jail under such provision.
The PSA has been a contentious law, debated nationwide by top lawmakers and legal bodies. Critics argue that its provisions violate fundamental rights and risk misuse by administrative authorities while advocates advocate for its strict implementation in the public interest.
The act has been a subject of debate nationally, with critics citing potential misuse and violation of fundamental rights, while proponents argue for its strict implementation in the public interest.
Since Wednesday, 80 people have been taken into preventive custody. Of these, 21, including five women, were shifted to Bhaderwah, while others were moved to Kishtwar. Several detainees are expected to be released tonight.
All schools in the district will remain closed till Sunday, and all business establishments have been ordered to shut, according to orders from the Chief Education Officer. The AAP has accused the Centre of politically targeting the party.
At a protest in Jammu, AAP MP Sanjay Singh condemned the arrest, stating that the party will continue its struggle “against injustice on the streets, in Parliament, and if necessary, in the Supreme Court.”
